My first drone footage video ever, featuring Playa Prieta in Costa Rica. It begins with a view of Playa Penca and Potrero Bay in the distance to the south and ends with a view of Playa Prieta itself.
Playa Prieta is a quiet beach tucked away south of Playa Azucar (Sugar Beach) and north of Playa Penca and Playa Potrero/Potrero Bay. Beaches here are perfect for slowing down and getting away from the touristy areas.
A favorite among the locals, this quaint black and white sand beach is perfect for relaxing, watching sunsets, boogie boarding, skim boarding, body surfing and building sand castles.
The best place to stay for direct beach access is Villas Estival, a complex of 12 villas, complete with a pool, wifi, excellent security and visiting wildlife like howler monkeys and white throated magpie jays. One of the best things about staying at these villas is being able to roll out of bed and jump straight into the ocean!
During our stay we met a Tico teenager at the beach during sunset. He asked us to send him videos of him skim boarding, and told us his family owns Restaurant Las Brisas located on the next beach over at Playa Potrero. We ate lunch there the next day – the food was delicious and the margaritas were HUGE and tasty. Food and drinks always taste better with an ocean view and direct beach access. One of the best pastimes in Costa Rica is getting to know to the locals and it feels great to support family businesses.
When visiting the beaches of Costa Rica, whether it is rainy season or dry season, be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and insect repellant. The sun is intense and the mosquitoes can be voracious.
If you love beaches, I highly recommend that you add this one to your bucket list!
We had a lovely stay and look forward to visiting the area again in the near future. There is still so much more to explore.
